Our guest today is certified Health Coach and Chef Becca Serenity. Becca specializes in helping professionals transform their health so that they can live their best lives.
As a college athlete, Becca suffered from depression, anxiety, and a crippling eating disorder, but after five years of yo-yo dieting and binging, she changed her mindset and took control of her own healing journey. She lost 70 pounds and reclaimed her life. Now, Becca guides others to take their mental, emotional, and physical well-being to new heights.
Becca was also a superstar basketball player at her Arizona high school and was inducted into the Tolleson Basketball Hall of Fame, among many other accolades. She got a full scholarship to the University of Nebraska, and when she transferred to San Jose State, she set 3-point and free throw records. Today, she’s an assistant basketball coach at Yavapai College in Arizona.
So, if you’re ready to take control of your health and change your relationship with food, you’re definitely going to want to tune in to hear our conversation with the next rising star in the wellness space!
“In the black community, a lot of it you want to be thick. Think of Megan Thee Stallion and Nicki Minaj. That’s like the image of a lot of black girls, not speaking for the whole community, but that’s oftentimes what people are striving for. I didn’t strive to be thick, and I didn’t have this aspiration to be super thin. I was really just like, I want to be strong, I want to be lean, you know. And I think that kind of just stemmed from me being an athlete at the time, too. Like it was always having that validation that my body was good enough to be able to play. Because I grew up in West Phoenix, which was, you know, more middle class, lower class, I remember when I would have liked club games out in East Phoenix. There’d be white moms, I’d be like, wow they look so healthy, so vibrant, and like so young, and I didn’t really understand why until I got older. And then I realized, I was like, well, it comes down to, you know, the education, the income, awareness of nutrition and health. And I think that because that is lacking in the black community, then there’s naturally this, maybe not an aspiration to be a certain way.” - Becca Serenity
